Once built and weathered we do not advocate disassembly for storage, as this will affect long term strength and stability.
To help maintain a more original appearance, the furniture should be treated with an application of boiled linseed oil, taking care to follow manufacturers instructions and safety precautions. This is best applied with a cloth rather than brush. Treating the timber will normally help to reduce the amount of end grain cracking and possible warping that can occur over a long period of time. The weathering process is also slowed as it limits the changes in moisture of the wood. It should however be noted that once this course of treatment is started it needs to be continued regularly twice yearly to prevent uneven colouring as the wood weathers. It is not necessary to treat the wood to 'preserve it'.
